TIM HOLMSTROM

As a photographer, journalist, and race organizer, I’ve visited and photographed in more than 30 countries in the last 25 years.   

Some personal highlights as a journalist and photographer include crewing on a replica of the tall ship Endeavor through the Panama Canal and Galapagos Islands, participating in a Kava ceremony with village elders on the Fijian island of Waya and spending days photographing Sea Gypsies on the islands of Borneo.  

The most challenging assignment I recall was rappelling down a series of 9 towering cascades and basins set into a high mountain gorge called Fleur Jaune Canyon on Reunion Island, off Madagascar. I was covering an adventure race and, after 5 hours of descending fixed ropes, I was euphoric to have survived mostly unscathed. 

I began painting later in life and strongly believe that my photography, travels and boundless curiosity deeply inform the work I’m creating now. 

My recent work oil on canvas and ink and oil on watercolor paper captures nature's temporary and chaotic forces and how we perceive our stream of experience, letting it flow in and around us. These experiences are all very tenuous, fragile, and transitory. However, we are built to last…for a time, and really for the briefest of times on a cosmic scale.   

We are always watching things form, dissolve, or devolve, always tossed about on the waves of creation, destruction, entropy, transformation, rebirth, and on and on it goes. We must endure and navigate all this the best we can in the time we have. 

I am thrilled that this work has begun to resonate with others, perhaps leading them to a fresh perspective that is unordinary, helpful, or insightful.
